Patchogue, New York — A Long Island man has pleaded guilty to multiple charges stemming from a devastating drunk-driving crash that killed a respected Nassau County police officer and seriously injured his passenger earlier this year.
Authorities announced that Matthew Smith, 21, admitted guilt to aggravated vehicular homicide and several other charges connected to the Jan. 31 collision that claimed the life of Officer Patricia Espinosa, 42, a wife, mother, and longtime member of the Nassau County Police Department.
The guilty plea marks a significant development in a case that shocked communities across Long Island and left a grieving family searching for justice.
Prosecutors Say Driver Ignored Warnings Before Getting Behind the Wheel
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, Smith spent the evening drinking at a bar in Patchogue before deciding to drive despite concerns from people around him.
Investigators said patrons at the establishment reportedly urged him not to get behind the wheel after observing his condition. Despite those warnings, prosecutors allege Smith left the bar and later met a passenger, John Andali, at a nearby taco restaurant.
The two then decided to travel together in Smith’s Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.
Authorities said the pair initially planned to visit a casino but changed course after learning it was closed.
High-Speed Crash Killed Officer on Her Way to Work
Prosecutors said Smith had a blood alcohol concentration of .20%, more than twice New York’s legal driving limit.
Court documents allege that he drove through a red light at approximately 70 mph in a 30 mph zone before crashing into Espinosa’s vehicle.
The impact was catastrophic.
Authorities said Espinosa’s vehicle overturned, leaving her trapped upside down inside the wreckage while emergency crews worked to free her.
She was transported to a hospital for treatment but later died from her injuries. In a statement, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney reflected on the devastating loss suffered by Espinosa’s family.
“Patricia Espinosa, a wife and mother who dedicated her life to protecting others, was killed on her way to work, leaving her daughter without a mother, her husband without a wife, and a family without their beloved daughter and sister.”
Passenger Suffered Serious Injuries
The collision also left passenger John Andali with significant injuries. According to prosecutors, he suffered pelvic and spinal fractures along with a severe head laceration.
Investigators also reported finding a bottle of Bacardi rum and a shot glass inside Smith’s pickup truck following the crash. The evidence became part of the broader investigation into the circumstances leading up to the deadly collision.
Guilty Plea Brings Case Closer to Conclusion
With the guilty plea now entered, prosecutors said Smith has accepted responsibility for both Espinosa’s death and the injuries sustained by his passenger.
“With today’s guilty plea, the defendant has admitted responsibility for causing her death, as well as for the injuries that he caused to his passenger,” Tierney said.

“While nothing will restore what the victims and their families and colleagues have lost, we hope that this plea provides them with some measure of justice.”
As part of the plea agreement, Smith will forfeit his Chevrolet Silverado. Authorities said he previously pleaded guilty to more than a dozen related charges.
Sentencing Scheduled Later This Month
Smith now faces a potential prison sentence of up to 22 years, followed by three years of post-release supervision. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 20, when a judge will determine his final punishment.
The case serves as another stark reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and the life-altering consequences that can result from a single decision to get behind the wheel after drinking.
