64-Year-Old Driver Killed After Slamming Into Stopped Bus in San Bernardino County

Colton, California — A 64-year-old man was killed after his vehicle crashed into the rear of a stopped public transit bus in San Bernardino County, according to local authorities.

The fatal collision occurred on the afternoon of June 10 and remains under investigation as officials work to determine what led up to the crash.

Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after the collision was reported and found significant damage involving a passenger vehicle and an OmniTrans bus.

Crash Happened at Busy Colton Intersection

According to police, officers were called to the area near South Mt. Vernon Avenue and Centerpoint Drive in Colton just after 4 p.m. following reports of a traffic collision.

Investigators said a Lincoln Town Car crashed into the rear of an OmniTrans bus that had been stopped at a red traffic signal. The impact caused catastrophic injuries to the driver of the Lincoln.

Authorities identified the victim as Tracy Lee Stuart, 64, of Colton.

Despite emergency response efforts, Stuart was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not yet released details regarding what may have caused the vehicle to strike the stopped bus.

Bus Passengers Escape Serious Injuries

Several passengers aboard the OmniTrans bus reported suffering minor injuries following the collision.

However, authorities said none of the passengers requested transportation to a hospital. The bus driver was not injured during the crash.

While the collision resulted in a tragic loss of life, officials noted that the outcome could have been significantly worse given the number of people aboard the transit vehicle at the time of the impact.

Investigators have not indicated whether weather conditions, speed, mechanical issues, or a medical emergency may have played a role in the crash.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

Police continue to examine evidence from the scene as they work to establish the circumstances that led to the collision.

Traffic investigators are expected to review witness statements, vehicle damage, roadway conditions, and any available surveillance footage that may help determine what happened in the moments before the crash.

At this time, authorities have not announced any preliminary findings regarding the cause of the collision.
