Mom of 3 Loses Both Legs After Horrific Boating Accident as Quick-Thinking Bystanders Help Save Her Life

Bear Lake, Idaho — A mother of three is beginning a long recovery after a devastating boating accident on Bear Lake left her with life-threatening injuries that required both of her legs to be amputated.

Authorities say the woman, who has not been publicly identified at her family’s request, was injured during a tubing outing when she was pulled beneath the boat and struck by its propeller. Thanks to the quick actions of nearby bystanders, she survived the traumatic incident and is now reported to be in stable condition.

Boating Accident Turned Into a Life-Threatening Emergency

According to the Bear Lake County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews responded to the accident on Saturday, July 11, after receiving reports of a serious boating incident on Bear Lake.

Officials said the woman, believed to be in her mid-30s, was being pulled behind a boat on an inflatable tube when she was struck by the vessel’s propeller.

She was airlifted from the scene to receive emergency medical treatment, where doctors were forced to amputate both of her legs because of the severity of her injuries.

Bystanders’ Quick Actions Helped Save Her Life

Authorities credited nearby beachgoers with preventing the tragedy from becoming even worse.

According to the sheriff’s office, several bystanders immediately applied tourniquets to control the severe bleeding before emergency responders arrived.

“There were bystanders on the beach that applied tourniquets to the victim’s injuries,” officials said. “These actions ultimately saved her life.”

One of those bystanders, Dan Taylor, said he and his family had just arrived at the lake when they heard desperate cries for help coming from a nearby boat.

Witness Describes Emotional Rescue

Taylor told local media that people aboard the boat were urgently calling for assistance as they approached the shoreline.

His wife reminded him that emergency tourniquets were stored in their vehicle, and he quickly retrieved them before helping the injured woman.

Taylor said it soon became apparent how serious the situation was.

“Everybody was out on the bow shouting, ‘Help, help, please help,’” Taylor recalled.

He said his family used a tourniquet on one injury and a strap on the other while waiting for first responders to arrive.

Despite the unimaginable circumstances, Taylor said the woman remained remarkably calm throughout the ordeal.

“The victim was so courageous, and she was conscious through the whole thing,” Taylor said. “Her spirit of just staying in the moment and staying calm was nothing I ever could have conceived in a situation like that.”

Family Faces Long Road to Recovery

A GoFundMe campaign created to support the family says the mother has already undergone multiple surgeries and remains hospitalized as she begins months of recovery.

Organizers say she will require ongoing medical treatment, rehabilitation, prosthetic limbs, home accessibility modifications and extensive long-term care as she adjusts to life after the accident.

The Bear Lake County Sheriff’s Office later shared that family members confirmed the woman is currently in stable condition.

Supporters continue to rally around the family, offering donations, prayers and words of encouragement as they prepare for the difficult journey ahead.

“Your prayers, encouragement, and support mean more than words can express,” organizers wrote. “Thank you for surrounding this family with compassion, generosity, and hope.”
