Memphis, TN: Man Pulled Over for Traffic Violation Had Dead Wife Propped in Passenger Seat, Police Say

A routine traffic stop in downtown Memphis turned into a murder investigation after officers discovered a woman’s body in the passenger seat of the car they had pulled over.

Police say 50-year-old Tyronne Brazille of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, had been driving through multiple states with his wife’s body beside him before he was stopped for a traffic violation in Memphis. When officers approached the vehicle, they found 50-year-old Lanessa Bradford unresponsive, with a gunshot wound. Brazille was taken into custody on the spot and booked as a fugitive.

Investigators believe the couple got into an argument at a park in Baton Rouge, after which Brazille allegedly shot and killed his wife. What happened next is what has left people who knew the couple struggling for answers — Brazille reportedly kept driving for hours, crossing state lines with Bradford’s body still in the car.

A longtime family friend, Shelicka Decker, told a Memphis TV station that Bradford had quietly been planning to leave her husband. She said Bradford intended to walk away from everything — her car, her belongings — and had already reached out to family members out of town to arrange her escape.

Decker described a marriage strained by long-standing problems, and said Brazille had struggled with mental health issues. She said Bradford had confided that Brazille threatened to hurt her or himself if she ever tried to leave, and that he had become physically abusive only in the past few months.

“It surprised me that he killed her,” Decker said, adding that she had feared the opposite outcome instead.

Bradford worked at a local elementary school, and colleagues reportedly asked for a welfare check on her after she missed several days of work without explanation.

Brazille is expected to appear in court in Memphis before being extradited back to Louisiana, where he will face a murder charge in connection with Bradford’s death.

Those who knew the couple say the news has been difficult to process. “This is just not the same person that we grew up with,” Decker said, remembering Bradford as someone who was, in her words, a genuinely good person.

This is a developing story. Authorities have not yet released additional details about the investigation.
