Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — Anyone planning to attend Philadelphia’s massive Fourth of July celebration should prepare for significant traffic disruptions, transit changes and extreme heat precautions as the city gears up for one of its biggest events of the year.
Philadelphia will celebrate America’s 250th birthday with the One Philly: Unity Concert for America on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, followed by a spectacular fireworks display over the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The free event is expected to attract thousands of visitors, prompting city officials to implement extensive road closures and public safety measures throughout the holiday weekend.
Star-Studded Concert to Highlight Philadelphia’s July 4 Celebration
The festivities begin at 5 p.m. on July 4, featuring an impressive lineup of performers led by Christina Aguilera, Jill Scott and The Roots.
The Roots are also expected to welcome several special guests, including Will Smith, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Meek Mill, Gillie Da King, Wallo267 and others, while comedian Wanda Sykes will serve as host for the evening.
The celebration will conclude with a midnight fireworks display over the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Dozens of Roads Will Be Closed Throughout the Weekend
To accommodate the large crowds and event setup, the city will begin closing numerous streets and ramps starting around 6 a.m. on Friday, with many restrictions remaining in place until Monday morning.
Among the major closures are:
- Benjamin Franklin Parkway from 17th Street to Eakins Oval
- Eakins Oval
- Kelly Drive between Eakins Oval and Fairmount Avenue
- Martin Luther King Jr. Drive from Falls Bridge to Eakins Oval
- Portions of Race Street, Vine Street, Spring Garden Street, 20th through 23rd Streets, and several nearby neighborhood roads
- Multiple I-676 and I-76 entrance and exit ramps, including ramps at 22nd Street and Spring Garden Street
Additional closures will take effect Saturday evening from 8 p.m. until approximately 1 a.m. Sunday, including portions of Kelly Drive and Waterworks Drive while fireworks are underway.
Residents are encouraged to allow extra travel time and avoid driving near the Parkway whenever possible.
SEPTA Riders Should Expect Transit Changes
Public transportation will be the easiest way to reach the celebration, but riders should also expect detours.
Beginning Thursday morning, several SEPTA bus routes operating near the Parkway—including Routes 7, 32, 33, 38, 43, 48 and 49—will follow temporary detours through Sunday afternoon.
Officials recommend using the 15th Street Market-Frankford Line Station or the Race-Vine and City Hall Broad Street Line stations, which provide the most convenient access to the event.
City Expands Heat Safety Measures as Temperatures Near 100 Degrees
The celebration comes as a dangerous heat wave continues across the region, with temperatures expected to climb close to 100 degrees on Independence Day.
To help visitors stay safe, Philadelphia will operate pop-up visitor centers from City Hall to Lemon Hill between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. offering drinking water, shaded rest areas and misting stations.
Additional water and ice supplies will be distributed throughout the day, while misting fans will help cool attendees during the concert.
Medical tents will also be stationed at several locations along the Parkway, including Von Colln Field, Eakins Oval, 22nd Street and the Parkway, and 20th Street and the Parkway, providing emergency assistance if needed.
City officials encourage everyone attending the celebration to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, use sunscreen and take frequent breaks from the heat while enjoying the festivities.
