(Detroit) Redford Theater presents ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'(1953), Saturday, September 30, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Family entertainment at its best! This weekend, the Redford Theatre is happy to present one of the great Hollywood musical comedy films of all time, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.”

Don’t miss your chance to see Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell in the prime of their careers as they hunt for rich husbands on board an Atlantic Ocean liner. The film also features Charles Coburn as the dirtiest of dirty old men and George “Foghorn” Winslow, the scene-stealing youngster with the froggy voice and deadpan delivery, in the role he is probably best known for.

Check out the preview:

Monroe and Russell made a fantastic team in this film and worked together exceptionally well, but Monroe always comes to mind when this movie is brought up. Anita Loos, who wrote the book on which the movie is based, is quoted as saying, “I did not write the role of Lorelei Lee as Marilyn performed it in the film, but I sure as hell wish I had!”

Monroe’s rendition of “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” and the red dress she wore for that number are considered iconic. They inspired the “Material Girl” video by Madonna in the mid-1980s.

A  couple of added notes…
* In the “Ain’t There Anyone Here for Love?” sequence, Jane Russell’s fall into the pool was an accident, but when Howard Hawks saw it in the “dailies,” he decided to keep it in the film.
* George Winslow went on to appear in a few other films and television shows, but as he grew older, he lost his charm, and his voice changed.  He retired from Hollywood before reaching his teens and eventually became a successful photographer.

Pick your time for 90 minutes of spectacular singing, dancing, and comedy with two of Hollywood’s all-time greats. Show times are Saturday, September 30, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.  Don’t miss the organ overture a half hour before show time for additional entertainment provided by the Redford’s delightful Barton Theatre Pipe Organ.
