Stray: The Beloved Video Game Becomes an Animated Film

Prepare for the ultimate cinematic experience as the popular video game Stray takes on a new form in an exciting animated movie.

Following the tremendous success of Nimona on Netflix, Annapurna Animation has announced plans to bring Stray to life on the big screen. This project is just one of the many thrilling developments happening at the company, with the co-director of Nimona working on a mysterious new project, along with famed Ice Age director Chris Wedge.

While multiple video games from Annapurna Interactive are set to be adapted, Stray has been chosen as the first to receive the feature film treatment.

“What makes us human without a single human being? In an exclusive interview with EW, that’s what Stray is all about,” shared Robert Baird, the head of Annapurna Animation.

“This film will be a buddy comedy that follows the hilarious dynamic between a cat and a robot. The game captured people’s hearts by letting them see the world through the eyes of an adorable cat. Our challenge is to bring that essence and storytelling to the movie.”

Not only will the Stray movie stay true to the heart of the game, but it will also introduce a unique and powerful concept.

Baird revealed that the film will have a “hopepunk” vibe, making it the first and greatest. There’s a deep emotional aspect to Stray’s story that Baird believes will resonate with audiences, and he is determined to honor the game’s legacy with a groundbreaking cinematic experience.

While other game adaptations are in the works, the focus is on Stray. Annapurna Interactive has a stellar reputation for releasing critically acclaimed titles such as What Remains of Edith Finch, Outer Wilds, Telling Lies, and Twelve Minutes. Additionally, highly anticipated games like Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth and Silent Hill: Townfall are on the horizon.

As Baird acknowledged, turning a beloved game into an engaging film is no easy feat. However, Annapurna is up for the challenge, embracing the puzzle of what makes Stray so popular and ensuring a thoughtful and respectful approach to the adaptation.

Prepare to embark on a new adventure as Stray leaps onto the big screen. Although specific details about the film remain a mystery, the excitement and anticipation are palpable.

Stay tuned for updates on the release date, and get ready to experience the beloved world of Stray in a whole new way.
