A 23-year-old Michigan man has been convicted of first-degree murder after shooting his fiancée in the neck at close range in front of their infant child — and then calling 911 to claim it happened while he was cleaning his gun.
Michael Webb was found guilty last week by a Pontiac jury for the 2025 murder of Rachel Wooten at their Highland Township home, located on Maple Drive, approximately 40 miles northwest of Detroit. He was also convicted of using a firearm during the commission of a felony.
What made the case even more chilling: Wooten had texted a family member that she was afraid for her life on the very same day she was killed.
Oakland County deputies were called to the home around 4 p.m. on April 15, 2025, after Webb himself dialed 911 and told dispatchers he had shot his fiancée — and himself. He arrived at the scene with a self-inflicted, non-fatal gunshot wound. When officers questioned him, he said simply, “It was an accident.”
But investigators weren’t convinced. Evidence recovered from the home did not support Webb’s account that the shooting was accidental. Forensic findings suggested his wound came from the same bullet that killed Wooten.
Their 6-month-old baby was found inside the home, unharmed.
Oakland County Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald did not mince words in her statement following the verdict.
“Michael Webb executed Rachel Wooten in front of their child, then called 911 and lied about it,” McDonald said. “He will most likely spend the rest of his life in prison, as he should.”
McDonald added that while the verdict brings accountability, Rachel Wooten’s child will grow up without a mother — and called for stronger protections for women and children living under the threat of domestic violence.
Webb is scheduled to be sentenced on October 7.
