Woman Faked Pregnancy for Months Before Killing Pregnant Friend and Taking Her Baby, Documentary Reveals

New Boston, Texas — A friendship built on trust, shared milestones, and what appeared to be a common experience of pregnancy ended in one of the most shocking crimes in recent memory, a case now revisited in a new Netflix true-crime documentary.

The documentary, Maternal Instinct, examines the murder of Reagan Simmons-Hancock, a 21-year-old expectant mother whose life was tragically cut short in 2020 by someone she considered a close friend.

At the center of the case is Taylor Parker, a Texas woman who prosecutors said spent months pretending to be pregnant before carrying out a crime that stunned investigators, family members, and the wider community.

Friendship Built on a Devastating Deception

Simmons-Hancock first met Parker while searching for an affordable wedding photographer.

Recommended by a friend, Parker quickly became more than a photographer. She formed a close friendship with Simmons-Hancock and became increasingly involved in her life.

Their relationship appeared to grow stronger after Simmons-Hancock became pregnant with her second child.

Parker claimed she was also expecting a baby. According to investigators and testimony presented during trial, that pregnancy never existed.

Parker had previously undergone a hysterectomy and was unable to become pregnant, a fact that few people around her reportedly knew.

Despite that reality, prosecutors said she maintained an elaborate deception for months.

Elaborate Pregnancy Hoax Fooled Friends and Family

According to court testimony and the documentary, Parker created an extensive false narrative around her supposed pregnancy.

She allegedly wore a silicone baby bump, shared fake ultrasound images, staged medical appointments, and posted pregnancy updates on social media.

Investigators said she also hosted a gender-reveal celebration, took maternity photographs, and prepared a nursery for a baby girl.

Even when questions arose about inconsistencies in her story, Parker reportedly continued creating explanations and fabricated documents to support her claims.

Director Jessica Dimmock said Parker demonstrated an extraordinary ability to manipulate those around her.

“What Taylor did is a type of cold-hearted manipulation that could make your blood run cold.”

Dimmock added that many warning signs were overlooked because Parker consistently found ways to explain away concerns.

Pregnant Mother Found Dead Inside Her Home

The case reached its tragic conclusion on Oct. 9, 2020. Authorities said Simmons-Hancock, who was in the final weeks of her pregnancy, was found dead inside her home.

According to investigators, she suffered more than 100 sharp-force injuries during the attack.

Her young daughter was inside the home at the time but was not physically injured. Later that same day, authorities encountered Parker after she was stopped while driving erratically.

She reportedly told officers she had just given birth and that the newborn was not breathing.

Emergency responders transported both Parker and the infant to a hospital, where the baby was pronounced dead. Medical staff quickly discovered that Parker showed no signs of recent childbirth.

DNA testing later confirmed the child was Simmons-Hancock’s daughter.

Conviction Leads to Death Row Sentence

Investigators ultimately pieced together evidence showing months of planning and deception leading up to the attack.

Prosecutors argued that Parker’s fake pregnancy scheme spiraled into desperation as she attempted to maintain the illusion for those around her.

During trial, medical experts testified regarding the infant’s condition, while prosecutors detailed Parker’s actions before and after the crime.

A jury ultimately convicted Parker of capital murder in 2022. She was sentenced to death and remains on Texas death row.

Family Continues to Cope With Unimaginable Loss

Years after the crime, Simmons-Hancock’s family continues to mourn a loss that loved ones say will never fully make sense.

Director Jessica Dimmock described Reagan as a devoted mother, loving wife, and compassionate person who trusted others and saw the good in people.

“Reagan was a completely unsuspecting victim in all of this,” Dimmock said. “It all came down like a bolt of lightning. No one saw it coming.”

While the documentary revisits the details of the case, family members continue focusing on honoring Simmons-Hancock’s memory and the life she lived rather than the tragedy that ended it.
