Alvaton, Kentucky — A Kentucky community is mourning the loss of a mother of three who died after attempting to save a stranger’s child from drowning in a creek, an act loved ones say perfectly reflected the kind of person she was.
Sarah Jo Reeder was visiting Phil Moore Park in Alvaton, a small community near Bowling Green, when she saw a young boy in distress in the water. Without hesitation, she entered the creek to help.
What followed was a tragic chain of events that ended with Reeder losing her life while trying to save someone else’s.
Mother Entered Water to Rescue Child
According to family friend Melissa Donovan, Reeder immediately acted when she realized a child was struggling in the creek.
Donovan said the rescue effort quickly became dangerous as the child attempted to stay above water.
“She went in the water to try to save the boy, and he eventually pulled her down trying to come up,” Donovan said.
She explained that both Reeder and the child were eventually pulled from the water by a paddleboarder who also alerted emergency responders.
“And a paddleboarder pulled her and the boy out of the water and then got emergency services on the way.”
Emergency crews transported Reeder to a medical facility in Bowling Green, but despite efforts to save her, she died hours later.
Friends Say Helping Others Defined Her Life
Those who knew Reeder say her final act was entirely consistent with the way she lived her life.
Ashley Flowers, a close family friend who launched a fundraising campaign to help support Reeder’s children and funeral expenses, described her as someone who constantly put others first.
According to Flowers, helping people came naturally to Reeder.
“Her sudden loss has left her family in shock and need.”
Flowers said she learned of the tragedy through an emotional phone call from Reeder’s son shortly after returning home from work.
“So I picked it up because he doesn’t call me, and he said, ‘You need to come to the hospital. Something’s going to happen with mom.'”
Remembering her friend, Flowers said Reeder never hesitated when someone needed assistance.
“It’s just her automatic instinct is to help another person out, like to do whatever needs to be done to get the situation fixed or to handle it.”
Calls for Greater Safety Measures
The tragedy has also renewed discussions about safety at the popular creek.
Donovan said incidents involving dangerous water conditions have occurred in the area before and believes additional precautions should be considered.
“This is not an uncommon occurrence.”
She noted that similar rescue situations and water emergencies happen regularly at the location and suggested the presence of trained lifesavers could potentially prevent future tragedies.
The incident has sparked conversations among residents about whether more resources should be dedicated to protecting visitors during the busy summer season.
Family Remembers a Loving Daughter and Mother
As loved ones continue processing the loss, Reeder’s family is focusing on the legacy she leaves behind.
Her mother, Becky Crick, expressed gratitude toward a woman who reportedly entered the water and tried to save Reeder.

“She is an angel,” Crick said. “She did everything she could to save Sarah’s life.”
Crick recalled receiving a call from her grandson informing her that an accident had occurred and asking her to come to the hospital immediately.
Now, she says she wants people to remember the compassion and strength that defined her daughter’s life.
“I’m proud of the beautiful, strong woman you would become. I’m proud of how you cared about other people. You are my daughter, and I love you.”
For many in the community, Sarah Jo Reeder will be remembered not only as a devoted mother of three but also as a woman whose final act was an attempt to save a child she had never met.
