WEST ALLIS, Wisconsin — A 4-year-old boy named Dante Campbell is dead. And the two adults who were supposed to protect him chose to look the other way.
His mother, Charlotte Kurek, 31, pleaded guilty this week to child neglect with death and chronic child neglect. Court records confirm she knew her son was being abused — and did nothing to stop it.
Dante’s father, Devario Cruz, allegedly beat the child the night before the boy’s death. When Cruz checked on Dante the next morning, the child was stiff, blue, and unresponsive. Cruz told Kurek he believed their son was already dead.
Neither adult called 911 immediately.
Instead, the couple drove to a friend’s house, dropped off Dante’s twin sister, and kept the dying boy in the car. They eventually pulled into a Dairy Queen parking lot in a Milwaukee suburb, where emergency responders arrived and found Dante unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Investigators found substantial bruising across his small body. His clothes were soaked in urine. A law enforcement officer on the scene later stated it was “the most extensive and severe injuries that I have witnessed on a child.”
Kurek later admitted she had lied to protect herself. She also made a haunting admission to investigators — that her own son “looked like he got his a— beat by a grown man.”
She knew. She stayed silent. She turned up the music.
Cruz admitted to striking Dante at a “7 or 8” on a scale of force. He faces first-degree reckless homicide and repeated physical abuse charges. His next court date is Sept. 11.
Dante’s twin sister was also found with injuries. When asked what happened to her eye, she said simply: “Daddy hurt me.”
A family remembrance described Dante as “a happy and loving boy” with “the most amazing smile and laugh.”
He deserved so much better.
