Brooklyn, New York — A tense hours-long standoff in Brooklyn ended in a deadly exchange of gunfire Friday morning after an armed man allegedly opened fire on responding officers, injuring a veteran NYPD detective before being fatally shot by police.
Authorities said the incident unfolded inside a residential building in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood and involved members of the New York City Police Department’s Emergency Service Unit (ESU), one of the department’s most specialized tactical divisions.
The wounded officer, identified as Detective Matthew Gale, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg but is expected to survive.
Police Responded to Reports of Gunfire
According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, officers from the 79th Precinct responded to a 911 call shortly before 6 a.m. reporting multiple shots fired inside a two-story home.
Investigators identified the suspect as 48-year-old Lamin Simmons, who allegedly remained barricaded inside the residence for several hours as police attempted to bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion.
Authorities said Simmons fired approximately 20 rounds during the incident.
As officers established a perimeter around the property, police utilized specialized resources, including drone technology, to monitor the situation.
Family Escaped While Elderly Residents Remained Inside
During the standoff, Simmons’ wife and son were able to safely leave the residence and speak with officers.
According to police, family members informed authorities that Simmons had a history of mental illness.
However, an elderly couple remained trapped on an upper floor of the home, increasing concerns for the safety of those still inside the building.
Investigators later determined that the incident stemmed from a dispute involving the elderly residents.
Police said that throughout the morning, Simmons allegedly continued acting aggressively and throwing various household items from a window, including a microwave, lamps, and kitchen items.
Suspect Allegedly Opened Fire on ESU Officers
After hours of negotiations and tactical planning, ESU officers entered the residence at approximately 8:52 a.m.
Authorities said officers encountered Simmons near the top of a staircase inside the home. According to police, officers repeatedly ordered him to drop his weapon.
Instead, Simmons allegedly opened fire. During the exchange, Detective Gale was struck in the left leg.
Police said at least four officers returned fire, striking Simmons. Emergency medical personnel transported the suspect to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Weapons Recovered at Scene
Following the shooting, investigators recovered two firearms from inside the residence.
According to Commissioner Tisch, police found a Jimenez Arms .380-caliber handgun and a Beretta handgun equipped with an extended magazine.
Officials also noted that Simmons did not have a documented history of prior interactions with the NYPD.
The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the use of force by officers, remain under investigation as is standard procedure in police-involved shootings.
Officials Praise Detective’s Actions
Authorities said Detective Gale suffered a tibial fracture as a result of the gunshot wound but remains in stable condition at Kings County Hospital.
Commissioner Tisch praised the detective and fellow ESU members for confronting an extremely dangerous situation.
“What happened this morning is a reminder that the men and women of the NYPD routinely place themselves between danger and the people that they serve,” Tisch said.

“Today, once again, they met that danger with uncommon valor.”
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also visited the hospital and commended the detective’s bravery.
“He put on his uniform, he left his house, he said goodbye to his family, and he went to his job to keep our city safe,” Mamdani said.
As investigators continue reviewing the incident, officials say the focus remains on Detective Gale’s recovery and supporting everyone affected by the morning’s violence.
