Man Accused of Brandishing Knife on Miami Beach Says He Was ‘Just Trying to Get Girls’ Numbers’

Miami Beach, Florida — A late-night disturbance in one of South Florida’s busiest tourist destinations ended with an arrest after a man allegedly frightened visitors by displaying a knife and following people along Ocean Drive, according to police.

The incident unfolded Tuesday night in the heart of South Beach, where authorities say a suspect armed with a folding knife caused concern among patrons and workers in the area before officers tracked him down nearby.

The arrest comes during a busy period for Miami Beach’s entertainment district, which attracts thousands of visitors each week.

Reports of Man Harassing People on Ocean Drive

According to the Miami Beach Police Department, officers were called to the area near Ninth Street shortly before midnight after receiving reports of a man behaving aggressively.

Investigators said a worker at Mango’s nightclub alerted authorities after witnessing a man allegedly harassing people in the area.

Police later identified the suspect as Juan Luis Rivera Jr., 25.

When officers began investigating, they located individuals who said Rivera had approached them and behaved in a threatening manner.

According to the arrest report, Rivera allegedly lifted his jacket to reveal a pocketknife tucked into his waistband while speaking incoherently.

Victims Say Suspect Followed Them With Knife

Authorities said the situation escalated when Rivera allegedly began following the victims as they attempted to move away.

Police reports indicate the suspect eventually positioned himself alongside the individuals and continued approaching them while holding a knife.

One statement in the report alleges that Rivera asked the victims:

“Why y’all walking so fast?”

Investigators said the victims became increasingly concerned because Rivera was reportedly carrying the knife in his hand while following them through the crowded tourist area.

The encounter caused alarm among nearby witnesses and prompted further calls to law enforcement.

Witnesses Help Police Locate Suspect

According to authorities, Rivera fled the area after noticing police officers nearby.

However, the search was short-lived.

Police said two witnesses later spotted Rivera walking in the vicinity and flagged down officers, identifying him as the individual involved in the disturbance.

Officers detained Rivera and reportedly recovered a folding knife during the encounter.

When questioned by police, Rivera allegedly denied wrongdoing and offered an explanation for his behavior.

“I didn’t do anything. I was just trying to get girls’ numbers,” Rivera reportedly told officers.

The statement was included in the arrest report released by authorities.

Aggravated Assault Charge Filed

Following the investigation, police arrested Rivera shortly after midnight Wednesday.

He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a serious felony offense under Florida law. Authorities said Rivera has an address in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood.

As of Thursday morning, he remained in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Court records showed his bond had been set at $5,000.

Investigation Continues

While no physical injuries were reported in connection with the incident, police say the allegations raised significant public safety concerns due to the presence of a weapon in a crowded tourist area.

Ocean Drive remains one of Miami Beach’s most heavily visited destinations, known for its nightlife, restaurants, hotels, and large pedestrian crowds.

Investigators have not released additional details about the incident, and the case will proceed through the court system.
