Truck Stops in Middle of Ohio Interstate, Triggers Multi-Vehicle Crash

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A truck came to an unexpected stop in the middle of a busy interstate, setting off a chain-reaction crash before driving away from the scene, according to video released by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).

What Happened

The incident occurred on Interstate 670 in Ohio, where a truck halted in the right-hand travel lane near an exit ramp. Traffic camera footage shared by ODOT shows vehicles quickly backing up behind the stopped truck, with several drivers swerving — some at the last second — to avoid rear-ending it.

As one vehicle attempted to merge onto the exit ramp, it nearly sideswiped an SUV in the process. Moments later, a car following behind failed to stop in time and struck a stationary work truck that was positioned two vehicles back from the original truck.

The truck that initially stopped in the lane then pulled away and left the scene, according to the footage.

Officials Respond

ODOT addressed the incident publicly, using it as a reminder about proper roadway safety when drivers are uncertain of their route.

“If you’re confused, new to driving, or just lost, do NOT stop in a travel lane. Instead, just safely exit while maintaining the flow of traffic or safely pull over,” an ODOT representative said in a social media post.

Why It Matters

Sudden stops in active travel lanes are a leading cause of highway pileups, particularly on high-speed interstates where following distances can be short and reaction time limited. Traffic safety experts routinely advise drivers who miss an exit or feel unsure of their route to continue to the next exit rather than stopping in traffic, or to safely move to the shoulder if necessary.

ODOT has not indicated whether charges are pending against the driver of the truck involved.
