Miami, Florida — A dispute over household trash allegedly turned violent when a 78-year-old landlord attacked his tenant with a machete, leaving the victim with serious injuries and prompting criminal charges, according to Miami police.
Authorities say the confrontation unfolded Wednesday evening at a residence in southwest Miami, ending with one man hospitalized and the landlord behind bars.
Argument Over Trash Allegedly Escalates
According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, officers responded to a home in the 1900 block of Southwest 17th Street at approximately 5 p.m.
When police arrived, they found the victim bleeding from his right arm while attempting to cover a wound with a piece of clothing.
Investigators said the victim told officers that he had been arguing with his landlord, Victor Rodriguez-Polledo, about items that needed to be discarded from the property.
During the disagreement, Rodriguez-Polledo allegedly became increasingly agitated.
According to the victim’s statement, the landlord suddenly shouted in Spanish:
“What the f— are you looking at?”
The victim said Rodriguez-Polledo then added:
“You’ll see what I have for you.”
What began as a verbal dispute quickly escalated into a violent encounter, police said.
Tenant Allegedly Attacked With Machete Outside Home
Investigators said the victim walked outside the residence following the argument. According to police, Rodriguez-Polledo allegedly followed him while carrying a machete.
Authorities say the landlord then raised the weapon and struck the tenant in the shoulder and arm.
Police allege that Rodriguez-Polledo attempted a second swing with the machete moments later. The victim reportedly raised his arm in an effort to protect himself, but the blade caused a deep wound to his wrist and arm.
The injury was severe enough to leave a significant laceration that required emergency medical treatment.
Witness Helps Stop the Struggle
After being struck, the victim reportedly fought back in an attempt to disarm his landlord.
Police said the tenant pushed Rodriguez-Polledo against a nearby fence as the two men struggled for control of the weapon.
The confrontation eventually moved to the ground, where the pair continued wrestling. A witness then stepped in and managed to take possession of the machete, bringing the altercation to an end.
Authorities said the witness suffered a minor cut to her hand during the intervention but did not sustain serious injuries.
Her actions may have prevented the situation from becoming even more dangerous, investigators noted.
Victim Hospitalized, Suspect Jailed
Paramedics transported the injured tenant to a local hospital for treatment.
According to police, he suffered a deep laceration measuring approximately three inches on his right wrist, along with additional cuts and abrasions to his body.
Officers later arrested Rodriguez-Polledo and charged him with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Police said the suspect provided a statement after his arrest, though details of that statement were not publicly available in court documents.
