Miami, Florida — A grieving South Florida mother is demanding answers after the body of her 23-year-old son was recovered from Biscayne Bay, leaving family members searching for clarity about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Akim Liverpool, affectionately known as “King” by friends and loved ones, was found Sunday after he was last seen aboard a charter boat the previous night. Authorities have indicated that they believe Liverpool may have fallen overboard, but the investigation remains ongoing.
As law enforcement agencies continue their review of the case, Liverpool’s family says they are still struggling to understand exactly what happened.
Family Remembers a Young Man Who Inspired Others
For his mother, Roshell Williams, Akim Liverpool was much more than her son.
She described him as her best friend and someone who devoted himself to helping others through volunteer work, mentoring, and coaching young athletes.
Liverpool also made a lasting impression during his time at Florida Memorial University, where he was known throughout the campus community and earned recognition as “Mr. Homecoming.”
Williams said her son’s impact extended far beyond his years.
“He is a living legend at 23 years old. That’s what I want you to tell them.”
The emotional tribute reflected the pride she feels for the life her son lived and the example he set for others in his community.
Mother Recalls Final Conversation
As she continues to process the tragedy, Williams shared the final words exchanged between her and her son before he left.
The conversation has remained with her since learning of his death.
“I (said), ‘Please don’t leave me, just stay a little while.’ That’s what I told my son. He said, ‘Don’t worry about it, I’m coming right back.’”
For Williams, those words now carry heartbreaking significance.
She also spoke passionately about the person her son was, rejecting stereotypes and emphasizing his accomplishments and positive influence.
“A young Black male from Miami-Dade County ― no, he was not gang banging, he wasn’t smoking no dope, he wasn’t selling no dope.”

“And it is possible for you to come from nowhere and be something.”
Family members say Liverpool dedicated much of his time to uplifting others and serving as a role model for young people.
Family Upset Over Videos Shared Online
In addition to grieving the loss, Williams expressed frustration over reports that videos showing her son’s body were shared on social media.
She called the circulation of such content disrespectful and urged people to consider the impact on families already dealing with tragedy.
“Take that down. Facebook, whoever-book, whatever anybody got going on, it’s utterly disrespectful,” Williams said.
She added a message encouraging people to show compassion and respect during difficult moments.
“One good day, be mindful.”
The family hopes people will honor Liverpool’s memory rather than focus on disturbing images related to the incident.
Investigation Continues as Questions Remain
Authorities have described the case as an active and ongoing investigation.
While officials believe Liverpool may have fallen overboard from a charter boat, many questions remain unanswered for his loved ones.
Family attorney Nixon LaRoche voiced concerns about the pace of the investigation and the time it has taken to receive information.
“Why is it taking law enforcement so long to confirm his identity? And why is it taking so long to get answers?” LaRoche asked.
“I mean, he was last seen on Friday. Today is now Tuesday. We still don’t have answers.”
For now, Liverpool’s family continues to wait for additional information while remembering a young man they say touched countless lives through his leadership, kindness, and dedication to his community.
