Suspect surrenders after pursuit, standoff in far East El Paso

EL PASO, Texas — A 23-year-old man surrendered to deputies early Sunday after leading them on a vehicle pursuit, striking a parked car and then fleeing on foot, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the driver, identified as Carlos Calvillo, failed to yield when they attempted a traffic stop in the Horizon area just before 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15.

During the pursuit, Calvillo allegedly ran through multiple stop signs before crashing into a parked, unoccupied vehicle, deputies said.

He then got out and ran on foot, and deputies were unable to locate him right away, the sheriff’s office reported.

Investigators obtained three arrest warrants charging Calvillo with evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, evading arrest or detention on foot, and failing to stop and give information after striking an unattended vehicle.

Around midnight on Aug. 16, deputies located Calvillo at a home in the 3300 block of Scarlet Point Drive in far East El Paso.

A brief standoff followed before Calvillo surrendered to deputies and was taken into custody without further incident, according to the sheriff’s office.

He was booked into the El Paso County Downtown Jail on a total bond of $30,500.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has not released additional details about the case. This story will be updated if more information becomes available.
