A 30-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly fleeing the scene of a crash that killed a bicyclist and his two dogs near Stockton last month, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officials said the collision took place around 10:18 a.m. on June 27 along westbound Eight Mile Road, just east of Interstate 5. The victim was pedaling his bicycle while towing a shopping cart rigged as a makeshift trailer, with his two dogs accompanying him, when a westbound vehicle slammed into him.
The driver did not stop to help, authorities said. The cyclist and both of his dogs died at the scene from the injuries they sustained.
In the days following the crash, CHP investigators worked to trace the vehicle involved, eventually narrowing it down to a silver or light-gray Ford Explorer manufactured sometime between 2011 and 2015. That lead helped them zero in on a suspect.
This past Tuesday, officers tracked down the SUV and say it bore visible damage consistent with the crash. The vehicle was seized and impounded as evidence in the case.
Shortly after, CHP arrested Larry Page, 30, on suspicion of felony hit-and-run resulting in death, along with vehicular manslaughter charges. He was booked into San Joaquin County Jail, where his bail has been set at $180,000.
Page is scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment on Thursday.
