CHESTERFIELD, Virginia — A mother’s instinct to save her child cost her her own life. Now five children are without their mother, and a family is shattered across two countries.
It happened just before 6 p.m. on a Sunday evening at a private pond in Chester, Virginia.
A 12-year-old boy entered the water and began to struggle. Without hesitation, a 30-year-old female family member jumped in after him.
She never came back up.
A Desperate Rescue That Ended in Tragedy
Chesterfield Police responded to the scene and found both the boy and the woman unresponsive.
Despite lifesaving efforts, both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The victims have been identified as Maria Lopez and her 12-year-old son, Jonathan Lopez.
Maria was 30 years old. Jonathan was just beginning his life.
Family Left Behind on Two Continents
Maria Lopez is survived by her husband and five children.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched by people who knew the family, with one heartbreaking purpose — to raise enough money to bring Maria and Jonathan’s bodies home to Guatemala, and to cover the funeral and repatriation costs their family cannot afford alone.
The financial burden of grief should not fall on a family already carrying the unbearable weight of losing a mother and a son in the same moment.
A Loss That Words Cannot Fully Hold
There are no easy answers here. No way to make sense of it.
A mother saw her child in danger. She did what mothers do.
And now a family that came to this country carrying hopes for a better life is instead planning two funerals — far from home, far from everything familiar.
