A quiet residential block in Santa Monica turned into a scene of tragedy early Saturday morning when a devastating house fire claimed the lives of an elderly husband and wife who had spent almost seven decades together.
The blaze broke out around 2:50 a.m. at a single-family home on the 500 block of Lincoln Boulevard. By the time fire crews arrived, the house was already engulfed, with thick smoke pouring from the structure.
As firefighters worked to bring the flames under control, they made a grim discovery inside — two victims, later confirmed to be trapped in the same area of the home. Crews managed to pull both individuals out almost at the same time and immediately began emergency medical efforts, but neither survived.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has since identified the victims as 92-year-old Helen and Anthony Spaulding, longtime residents of the neighborhood.
According to the couple’s caregiver, Rick Garcia, the Spauldings had been happily married for nearly 70 years and raised five children together, all of whom remained deeply involved in their parents’ lives. Garcia described Anthony as a retired attorney, while Helen had spent years volunteering at a nearby church. He remembered them as warm, inseparable, and devoted to one another until the very end.
What caused the fire, however, remains a mystery. Investigators have not yet determined where or how the flames originated inside the home, and officials say the possibility of foul play has not been ruled out. Garcia confirmed that authorities are actively looking into every angle before reaching a conclusion.
For now, neighbors and family members are left grappling with the sudden loss of a couple whose decades-long love story ended in heartbreaking circumstances — and waiting for answers about what really happened that night.
