An armed man allegedly held a pregnant woman hostage inside an SUV as he led Massachusetts State Police on a chaotic rush-hour chase through the Boston area, slamming into multiple vehicles before troopers managed to stop him.
According to State Police, the incident began around 7:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, when officers received a report of a woman being held at gunpoint inside a vehicle traveling on Interstate 93 Northbound near Quincy. When troopers located the SUV and attempted to pull it over, the driver refused to stop, triggering a pursuit through some of the morning’s heaviest traffic.
Authorities say the suspect struck eight separate vehicles while trying to flee, weaving through packed lanes before finally coming to a stop in Milton. He then attempted to run from the scene on foot but was quickly caught by troopers.
In a statement, Massachusetts State Police said officers took the suspect into custody, got the hostage immediate medical attention, and seized a firearm recovered from inside the SUV.
Investigators identified the man as 31-year-old Dominic Hampton-Boyd of Dorchester. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Quincy District Court on Thursday, Aug. 13, on charges connected to the kidnapping and chase.
A traffic reporter who witnessed part of the pursuit unfold described the scene as almost unbelievable, comparing it to something out of an action film. She said that in nearly three decades covering roadways in the area, she had never seen a driver so determined to escape despite being boxed in by gridlocked traffic.
The condition of the pregnant woman has not been publicly disclosed. The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office has opened an investigation into the incident, and further details are expected to be released as the case moves through the court system.
