A Philadelphia man is facing manslaughter charges after allegedly hitting a 20-year-old motorcyclist during an illegal U-turn and dragging him under his SUV for more than a mile. The victim, a Temple University student, died the following morning.
What Happened on Kelly Drive
On June 24, around 11 p.m., Derek Reid, 48, was driving east on Kelly Drive in Philadelphia when he attempted an illegal U-turn onto Reservoir Drive. Realizing he couldn’t complete the turn, Reid tried to reenter the roadway — directly into the path of Bryce Wolfe, who was riding his motorcycle.
The collision trapped Wolfe underneath Reid’s SUV. Reid continued driving for over a mile with the young man pinned beneath the vehicle before the situation was discovered.
Wolfe was rushed to a nearby hospital but died the following morning.
A Father’s Heartbreak
Wolfe’s father, Clarence, spoke publicly about losing his son.
“To know your child was under that car in pain, and you protected him his whole life, did everything you could, and you couldn’t be there to help him,” he said.
Wolfe was described in his obituary as a young man with a bright future, known for his compassion and commitment to helping others.
Suspect Had Outstanding Warrants
At the time of the crash, Reid was already wanted by Philadelphia police on separate charges of rape, sexual assault, and corruption of a minor — stemming from a 2021 assault on a minor, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
He was arrested Thursday on Briar Road in Philadelphia while mowing lawns in the area.
Charges and Court Date
Reid faces multiple charges including involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, and recklessly endangering another person. He was arraigned Friday morning and is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on August 17.
