Penn State’s Berkey Creamery Unveils New Flavor to Mark University’s One Millionth Degree

Penn State’s Berkey Creamery has introduced a new limited-edition ice cream flavor called “One Million Scholar’s Chip” to celebrate the university awarding its one millionth degree on Saturday.

According to a university news release, the flavor was chosen by the Penn State community through a public vote. It will be sold from August 24 through the end of the year.

What’s in the Flavor

The Creamery describes “One Million Scholar’s Chip” as a vanilla ice cream made with extra vanilla bean and chocolate chips.

Doug Thomas, the Creamery’s operations manager, said the flavor is meant to celebrate the university’s long history and the milestone. He noted that the Creamery has been part of Penn State for 161 years and has become a staple for students, alumni and the wider campus community.

Other Flavor Options Considered

Before the winning flavor was chosen, Penn State fans could vote among four finalists:

  • One Milla Vanilla Bean
  • Million Strong Strawberry
  • Millionth Degree Mint Nittany
  • One Mil Grilled Stickies

The Millionth Degree Milestone

Prior to Saturday’s commencement, Penn State had awarded more than 999,400 degrees across its history. The university crossed the one million mark after awarding nearly 2,700 diplomas university-wide during Saturday’s ceremonies.

State and Local Recognition

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is expected to issue a statewide proclamation recognizing the milestone and Penn State’s impact across the state.

Local officials, including State College Mayor Ezra Nanes along with the Borough of State College and Centre County commissioners, are also planning proclamations to mark the occasion.
