Missouri Mother Killed While Buying Slushies for Her Kids as Suspects Open Fire Outside Ferguson Gas Station

Ferguson, Missouri — What was supposed to be a simple late-night stop for treats turned into a heartbreaking tragedy after a 35-year-old mother of five was shot and killed while buying slushies for her children at a gas station in Ferguson.

Family members say Shakeela Martin had stopped at a BP gas station Tuesday night with her children when gunfire suddenly erupted. According to a friend who was with her, several men arrived in a vehicle, opened fire on another group, and quickly fled the scene.

Moments later, Martin became an innocent victim of the violence.

According to relatives, Martin never made it back to her vehicle after stepping out to make the purchase.

A friend who witnessed the shooting said she heard at least 10 gunshots before realizing Martin had been struck.

Police say Martin died at the scene after suffering a gunshot wound. Four of her children, who were sitting in the back seat of her vehicle, were not physically injured, but witnessed the devastating incident.

Another male customer at the gas station was also shot and remained in critical condition as of Wednesday, according to police.

Family Struggles to Process the Tragedy

Martin’s loved ones described her as a caring mother, devoted daughter and loving sister whose life was centered around her children.

“She was just a sweet mom, a sweet daughter and a wonderful sister,” said the woman’s cousin.

The family said the tragedy feels impossible to understand, especially because Martin had simply stopped to buy a treat for her children.

“It was just senseless. It’s so surreal. How can a woman go to the store, get slushies for her kids and end up dying. These kids now have to live with this until they’re old and it will never go away. It will never leave our family,” her cousin said.

Martin leaves behind five children, ages 3, 4, 9, 11 and 15, who now face life without their mother.

A Bright Future Cut Short

Family members said Martin had recently been preparing to move into a new home in Jennings with her children and was excited about the next chapter in their lives.

That excitement has now been replaced with overwhelming grief.

“Everybody was really excited about her move. What do we do now?” asked Whittley Anderson.

Her young niece, 8-year-old Mia Garrison, remembered her aunt for her kindness and generosity.

“She was pretty, she was kind and she always gave me lots of treats,” Mia said.

The child also shared the heartbreak of losing someone she loved so suddenly.

“I cried because I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye and I didn’t know that she was gonna die.”

Whittley Anderson summed up how the family remembers Martin.

“She was just a light.”

Police Continue Search for Those Responsible

Ferguson Police continue to investigate the deadly shooting and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Police Chief Troy Doyle extended condolences to Martin’s family as detectives work to identify those involved in the gunfire.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Ferguson Police Department or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.

Meanwhile, a fundraiser has been established to help cover Martin’s funeral expenses and provide support for her five children as they cope with the unimaginable loss of their mother.
