New York City, New York — What began as a historic celebration for New York Knicks fans quickly turned into a night of chaos across the city after the team captured its first NBA championship in more than five decades.
Thousands of fans poured into the streets following the Knicks’ dramatic 94-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on June 13, ending a 53-year championship drought and sparking celebrations throughout all five boroughs.
However, according to the New York Police Department, the festivities soon escalated into widespread disorder that left multiple people injured, property damaged, and dozens arrested.
Massive Crowds Flood Streets After Historic Victory
Fans dressed in the Knicks’ signature blue and orange gathered around Madison Square Garden and other locations across the city immediately after the final buzzer.
The celebrations also coincided with heightened activity related to World Cup events in the region, creating unusually large crowds throughout Manhattan and surrounding areas.
Police said the gatherings grew increasingly difficult to manage as thousands of people packed major streets and intersections.
According to authorities, some celebrations evolved into dangerous situations involving fights, vandalism, fireworks, and violent confrontations.
Teenager Shot in Packed Midtown Crowd
One of the most serious incidents involved a 17-year-old who was shot near Broadway and 43rd Street amid the packed crowds.
Police said the area was so congested that emergency responders were unable to transport the victim by ambulance. Instead, officers transported the teenager to a hospital themselves.
Authorities said three persons of interest were taken into custody in connection with the shooting, and a firearm was recovered from the scene.
Officials have not yet released additional details regarding the victim’s condition.
Multiple Stabbings and Fights Reported
In addition to the shooting, police reported four separate stabbing and slashing incidents during the celebrations.
Authorities also responded to multiple large-scale physical altercations as crowds continued gathering well into the night. The unrest extended to law enforcement personnel as well.
According to the NYPD, 10 police officers suffered injuries while responding to incidents throughout the city. One officer was reportedly struck by a glass bottle, while another was punched in the face during crowd-control efforts.
The injuries highlighted the challenges officers faced while attempting to maintain order amid the massive gatherings.
School Buses and Vehicles Damaged During Unrest
Property damage was another major concern during the celebrations.
Police said five school buses that were being used to transport people between New York City and MetLife Stadium for World Cup-related events were heavily damaged.
According to authorities, the buses were set on fire, struck with bats, and climbed on by crowds. Several police vehicles also sustained significant damage.
Officials reported that five NYPD vehicles were badly damaged, while numerous other civilian vehicles suffered broken windows and other destruction.
One witness, Youssef Sabbr, described the atmosphere after exiting one of the buses before it became surrounded by crowds.
“They are expressing their happiness, a little bit violently, but it is what it is.”

Dozens Arrested as Police Work to Restore Order
Throughout the evening and into the early morning hours, officers continued dispersing crowds and responding to incidents across the city.
Police said individuals were seen climbing traffic lights and other structures while fireworks were ignited within densely packed crowds.
Videos posted online showed fans dancing, chanting, hugging, and celebrating the historic championship victory. New York resident Carol Marino described the scene to reporters.
“Oh, my God. It’s like New Year’s Eve times 20.”
By the end of the night, the NYPD had made 63 arrests connected to the celebrations.
Charges included assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and other offenses.
While many fans celebrated peacefully, authorities continue investigating the violent incidents and property destruction that overshadowed one of the most memorable nights in Knicks franchise history.
