Mammoth Lakes, California — A California couple is expected to recover after a frightening encounter with a black bear outside their home that left both residents injured and their dogs hurt during a rare wildlife attack.
Authorities said the incident unfolded early Monday morning in Mammoth Lakes, a mountain community in the Sierra Nevada known for frequent bear sightings but very few attacks involving humans.
According to the Mammoth Lakes Police Department, the confrontation began shortly after 6 a.m. when a woman opened the door of her home and discovered one of her dogs fighting with a black bear estimated to weigh around 70 pounds.
Dog Encounter Quickly Escalated Into Bear Attack
Officials said the woman immediately went outside in an effort to separate her dog from the bear.
However, the situation quickly turned dangerous when the animal redirected its attention toward her.
Investigators said the bear clawed and bit the woman, causing serious injuries. Hearing the commotion, the woman’s husband rushed outside to help but was also confronted aggressively by the bear.
As the attack continued, the couple used whatever they could find to defend themselves and their pets.
According to police, the woman struck the bear with a water bottle while the man grabbed a hatchet and hit the animal multiple times using the blunt side of the tool.
The actions ultimately stopped the attack, though the bear sustained critical injuries during the confrontation.
Couple and Dogs Expected to Recover
Despite suffering what authorities described as significant injuries, the couple managed to transport themselves to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Officials said both are expected to make full recoveries.
The couple’s dogs were also injured during the encounter. Fortunately, authorities reported that the animals sustained only minor injuries and are also expected to recover.
Health Officials Warn Families After Three Children Die from Suspected Diphenhydramine Overdoses
The attack shocked many residents because aggressive encounters involving black bears are uncommon in the area.
Wildlife Officials Euthanize Bear
Following the incident, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife evaluated the bear and determined that it posed a risk to public safety.
Officials subsequently euthanized the 17-month-old bear.
Law enforcement and wildlife experts noted that while black bears are frequently seen throughout Mammoth Lakes, attacks on humans remain extremely rare.
Mammoth Lakes Police Chief Dan Casabians emphasized how unusual the incident was.
“Incidents like this are extremely rare in Mammoth Lakes.”
Casabians said bears generally avoid contact with people and will typically retreat when confronted.
“Bears almost always avoid humans and will flee when confronted. This type of aggressive behavior is highly unusual.”
He also expressed gratitude that the victims are expected to recover and thanked first responders, wildlife officials, veterinarians, and hospital staff who assisted after the attack.
Officials Share Bear Safety Reminders
In the wake of the incident, authorities are reminding residents and visitors to take precautions when living or recreating in bear country.
Officials advise people not to approach or feed bears and to secure garbage in bear-resistant containers whenever possible. Residents are also encouraged not to leave pet food or bird feeders outdoors, as these can attract wildlife.
For hikers and walkers, making noise while traveling through wooded areas can help prevent surprise encounters, particularly during dawn and dusk when bears are often most active.
Authorities also recommend keeping dogs leashed and under supervision.
If someone encounters a bear, experts advise remaining calm, backing away slowly, and avoiding sudden movements. Running can trigger a chase response and increase danger.
While bear sightings are a normal part of life in Mammoth Lakes, officials hope this unusual attack serves as an important reminder about staying alert and taking precautions when sharing space with wildlife.
