Heartbroken NJ Dad Says ‘I Failed’ After Discovering His 3-Year-Old Son Face Down in Backyard Pool

Blackwood, New Jersey — A New Jersey family is mourning the heartbreaking loss of their 3-year-old son after a backyard pool accident, with the boy’s father sharing an emotional message describing the unimaginable moments that unfolded and urging other parents to never take time with their children for granted.

According to a fundraiser organized for the family, Elijah Stephen died after drowning in the family’s swimming pool on Saturday.

In a deeply personal social media post shared days later, his father, Michael Stephen, recounted the tragedy and the lasting pain it has left behind.

Father Describes Discovering His Son in the Pool

Michael Stephen said he was inside the family home when he noticed the back door had been left open.

Realizing something was wrong, he and his wife, Sandra “Sandi” Sheviln, immediately rushed outside. What they found, he said, was every parent’s worst nightmare.

According to Stephen, Elijah was lying face down in the backyard pool, unresponsive.

The father immediately began performing CPR while emergency responders rushed to the scene after his wife called 911.

Despite their efforts, Elijah suffered severe brain swelling, and doctors were unable to save him. Reflecting on the heartbreaking moment, Stephen shared the overwhelming guilt he continues to carry.

“I wasn’t fast enough. I failed. I will spend every day replaying that.”

He also wrote that the images from that day will remain with him forever.

Family Chooses Organ Donation

Although doctors determined Elijah could not recover from his injuries, his family made the difficult decision to donate his organs in hopes of helping others.

Stephen said that if his son’s passing could save another child’s life, it would honor the compassionate spirit Elijah showed during his short life.

“If we have the ability to prevent another parent from knowing this feeling, I’ll do what I can.”

He added:

“Elijah would want that as well.”

The family hopes their son’s legacy will continue through the lives of those who may benefit from the donation.

Remembering a Joyful Little Boy

In his tribute, Stephen described Elijah as a gentle, loving child who brought happiness to everyone around him.

He remembered his son as someone whose bright smile could light up a room and whose kindness touched those who knew him.

“He was the kind-hearted kid with a huge smile that lit the room.”

The grieving father also reflected on the future his son will never have.

“I’ll spend the rest of my days wondering what could have been. What would he have done? How Elijah could have changed the world.”

Family members and friends have continued offering support as they navigate an unimaginable loss.

Father Shares Emotional Message With Other Parents

As he mourns his son, Stephen is also urging other families to remain vigilant around water and treasure every moment with their children.

He noted how quickly life can change and encouraged parents not to take everyday moments for granted.

“Don’t ever take it for granted. Hug your babies. Hug them longer, hug them tighter.”

He concluded with a message that has resonated with many parents.

“You never know when it will be the last.”

The heartbreaking tragedy serves as a reminder of how quickly water-related accidents can occur and why constant supervision around pools is critical, particularly for young children.

As loved ones continue remembering Elijah, his family hopes his story encourages others to prioritize water safety while cherishing every precious moment spent together.
