NORTH BERGEN, New Jersey — A 21-year-old man with a suspended driver’s license is now facing serious criminal charges after a violent early-morning crash took the life of a 34-year-old North Bergen woman and left five others injured.
The crash happened around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2026, near the corner of Tonnelle Avenue and 70th Street.
When officers arrived, they found four vehicles tangled in the wreck — a tractor-trailer, a Hyundai Tucson SUV, a BMW 435i, and an Alfa Romeo Giulia.
A Woman Lost Her Life on Her Own Streets
Karen Velasquez-Ochoa, 34, of North Bergen, was behind the wheel of the Hyundai SUV. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Four people inside the Alfa Romeo were also injured. A passenger in the suspect’s BMW was hurt as well.
Suspect Charged With Aggravated Manslaughter
Mahmoud Khalifa, a 21-year-old resident of Clifton, was arrested on Monday following the investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Prosecutors say Khalifa was driving the BMW 435i at the time of the crash.
He is now charged with aggravated manslaughter, death by auto, five counts of assault by auto, and causing death while driving with a suspended license.
Khalifa is currently being held at Hudson County jail and is awaiting his first appearance in Superior Court.
A Suspended License — And Unanswered Questions
What makes this case especially troubling is that Khalifa should not have been behind the wheel at all.
Authorities have not yet released details on why his license was suspended or how long it had been.
Those answers, when they come, will matter deeply to a community still grieving the loss of one of its own.
