Wilmington, Delaware — A former Wilmington Hospital employee is facing murder and attempted murder charges after authorities say he returned to the hospital and shot two co-workers, killing one and seriously injuring another in a targeted attack that triggered a massive law enforcement response.
The shooting occurred Tuesday afternoon inside Wilmington Hospital and left staff, patients, and visitors scrambling for safety as police locked down the facility and launched a multi-state search for the suspect.
Officials later identified the accused gunman as John Wallace-Bey, 23, of New Castle, Delaware.
Shooting Erupts Inside Wilmington Hospital
According to investigators, the violence unfolded around 3:30 p.m. on June 16 inside Wilmington Hospital along West 14th Street.
Police said Wallace-Bey allegedly shot two 19-year-old men who were also employed at the hospital. Employees told local media the shooting occurred near the hospital cafeteria.
A spokesperson for ChristianaCare confirmed that the suspect and both victims worked at the hospital.
Authorities said one victim died from his injuries while the second victim was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Officials have not yet publicly released the identity of the deceased victim.
Investigators described the shooting as an isolated and targeted incident, indicating there was no ongoing threat to the broader public once the suspect fled the scene.
Suspect Allegedly Fired Earlier That Day
A source familiar with the investigation told NBC10 that Wallace-Bey had reportedly been terminated from his position at the hospital earlier on the day of the shooting.
While authorities have not publicly identified a motive, investigators are expected to examine whether the employment action played any role in the events that followed.
The shooting immediately triggered a lockdown at the hospital, with police officers and emergency personnel flooding the area.
Images from the scene showed hospital employees evacuating the building while following law enforcement instructions.
The lockdown was later lifted and hospital operations resumed.
Police Track Suspect to Philadelphia
Following the shooting, investigators determined that the suspect had fled in a white Toyota RAV4.
Using technology and investigative resources, law enforcement tracked the vehicle from Wilmington into Philadelphia.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured the vehicle arriving in Philadelphia several hours after the shooting.
Investigators later observed Wallace-Bey leaving a residence and entering a Toyota Sienna operating as an Uber. Police stopped the vehicle a short time later and took Wallace-Bey into custody without incident.
Authorities said he was transported to Philadelphia police headquarters before extradition proceedings were initiated.
Multiple Charges Expected
According to investigators, Wallace-Bey will face several serious charges in Delaware, including:
- Murder
- Attempted Murder
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
- Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
Officials noted that Wallace-Bey reportedly had no known prior criminal history before the shooting. As the criminal case moves forward, investigators continue working to determine exactly what led to the attack.
Questions Raised About Hospital Security
The incident has also sparked concerns among hospital employees regarding workplace security.
Some workers noted that while visitors must pass through metal detectors at certain entrances, employees can access parts of the facility using identification badges without going through the same screening process.
Hospital employee Vynisha Richardson said the shooting has changed how many workers view security procedures.

“As of yesterday, I think that needs to change,” Richardson said. “There should be metal detectors and maybe a constable or security guard at every entrance to this hospital.”
Questions also remain about how the suspect entered the facility and whether emergency alerts could have been issued more quickly after the shooting.
Community Mourns While Investigation Continues
As investigators continue gathering evidence, the focus remains on supporting victims, hospital employees, and affected families.
Authorities have made victim support services available while detectives continue reviewing surveillance footage, witness statements, and other evidence connected to the case.
For many in Wilmington, the tragedy has left a lasting impact on a place typically associated with healing and care.
