Harris County, Texas — A shooting inside a Kroger grocery store in the Houston area left two men critically injured Wednesday afternoon, with investigators saying the violence appears to have stemmed from a domestic dispute rather than a random attack.
According to the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office, deputies responded to reports of an active shooter at the Kroger located on Cypresswood Drive at approximately 2:50 p.m. on July 15.
Authorities said deputies reached the scene in less than two minutes, quickly securing the area and taking a suspect into custody.
Investigators Believe Shooting Stemmed From Domestic Dispute
Preliminary findings indicate the shooting was the result of a domestic disturbance involving the two men, according to Constable Mark Herman.
Officials emphasized that investigators do not believe the incident posed an ongoing threat to shoppers or the surrounding community after the suspect was taken into custody.
Family Violence investigators have since taken over the case as they work to determine exactly what led to the shooting.
Authorities said additional criminal charges will be filed once the investigation has been completed.
Both Men Hospitalized Following Gunfire
According to investigators, one of the men was airlifted from the scene in serious condition after suffering gunshot wounds.
The second man, identified by authorities as the suspected shooter, was also shot during the incident, sustaining a gunshot wound to the neck before being transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Officials have not released the identities of either individual involved.
By Wednesday evening, both men were reported to be in critical condition, according to officials.
Witnesses Reported Hearing Gunshots Inside Store
Earlier Wednesday afternoon, emergency dispatchers received multiple reports of shots being fired inside the grocery store.
Witnesses told authorities they saw a man wearing a yellow shirt and black pants with a firearm before deputies arrived.
According to Capt. Juan Flores of the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office, responding officers located two men suffering from gunshot wounds at the scene.
Investigators said one of the wounded men managed to walk out of the store, while the other remained inside with multiple gunshot wounds until first responders reached him.
Fortunately, authorities confirmed that no customers, employees or other bystanders were injured during the incident.
Investigation Continues as Store Responds
Law enforcement officials continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses to determine the full sequence of events.
Authorities have not yet announced what charges the suspect may face, saying appropriate charges will be filed after investigators complete their review.
In a statement provided following the shooting, Kroger said it could not comment on the incident while the investigation remains active.
“Out of respect for the ongoing police investigation, we are unable to release information at this time. We appreciate your understanding.”
Officials continue to stress that the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident connected to those directly involved and that there is no continuing danger to the public.
