Snake River Canyon, Idaho — A week-long search for a North Carolina father who disappeared while swimming in Idaho’s Snake River has come to a heartbreaking end after campers discovered his body along the shoreline.
Authorities confirmed that Tory J. Raether, 55, of Charlotte, North Carolina, was recovered on July 11, one week after he went missing while visiting the region with his family during the Independence Day holiday.
Raether had traveled to the area with his wife and one of his daughters to visit another daughter who lives in nearby Jackson, Wyoming, according to reports.
Father Reportedly Struggled in Strong River Current
Officials said the incident occurred on July 4 at Jumping Rock, a well-known recreation area in the Snake River Canyon near the Sheep Gulch Boat Ramp, just east of Alpine, Wyoming.
According to authorities, Raether entered the river without wearing a life jacket before encountering difficulty in the powerful current.
People who were with him immediately attempted to rescue him after realizing he was struggling in the water.
Despite their efforts, they were unable to reach him, and he disappeared beneath the river, prompting an extensive search operation.
Rescue Teams Searched Daily for a Week
Following the incident, Star Valley Search & Rescue, working under the direction of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, launched a large-scale search.
Rescue crews searched the river every day using drones, rafts, jet skis and a jet boat in hopes of locating Raether.
As the search continued without success, crews expanded operations into the nearby Palisades Reservoir, believing the river’s current may have carried him downstream.
Authorities continued searching despite difficult river conditions and the passage of several days.
Campers Spotted Body Along Riverbank
The search came to an end on July 11 when campers near the McCoy Creek Campground noticed a body from the shoreline at approximately 11:30 a.m.
According to officials, the campers paddleboarded closer to confirm what they had seen before immediately contacting emergency responders.
Fortunately, the search and rescue team was already conducting operations on the water and quickly responded to recover the body.
Authorities later confirmed that the body was that of Tory J. Raether.
Friend Remembers ‘Like a Brother’
As family and friends mourn his loss, Raether’s longtime friend Brad Johnson shared emotional memories of the man he had known for more than three decades.
Johnson said Jackson Hole had always been one of Raether’s favorite places to visit and recalled rafting the very same stretch of river together just last year.

“Tory wasn’t just a friend to me — he was like a brother,” Johnson said. “We were friends for 35 years, and I talked to him almost every day.”
He added:
“You can’t capture Tory in one sentence. It’s impossible.”
Authorities have not released any additional information regarding the incident. The tragedy serves as another reminder of the dangers posed by fast-moving rivers, especially when entering the water without a properly fitted life jacket.
