Denton, Texas — Another longtime staple of downtown Denton is preparing to close its doors, marking the end of more than three decades of serving residents and visitors in the city’s historic downtown district.
The Chestnut Tree Teahouse & Bistro, located at 107 W. Hickory Street, announced that it will permanently close on July 19, bringing to a close a chapter that began when the restaurant first opened on June 23, 1994.
The announcement comes as several longtime businesses have disappeared from the downtown area in recent years, particularly along Hickory Street and around Denton Square.
Owners Announce Emotional Farewell
The restaurant shared the news with customers in a message posted on its Facebook page, explaining that the building housing the business has been sold.
According to the owners, another business is expected to occupy the location after the restaurant closes.
In their announcement, the owners reflected on the countless memories created over the past 31 years.
“We are so endlessly grateful for our time in this building, and it’s difficult to put into words what it’s meant to us.”
The statement continued by recalling the many milestones celebrated inside the restaurant.
“We have celebrated countless weddings, reunions, birthdays, and anniversaries. We have loved, we have lost, and, through it all, this building has stood with us.”
For many customers, the restaurant became more than just a place to eat—it served as a gathering place for family celebrations, friendships, and community events.
Catering Business Will Continue
Although the restaurant itself is closing, the owners reassured customers that this is not the end of the Chestnut Tree brand.
They confirmed that Chestnut Tree Catering will continue serving clients after the restaurant closes.
The owners also expressed appreciation for the loyal customers, employees, and community members who supported the business throughout its three decades in downtown Denton.
“We are incredibly grateful for the years of support, friendship, and memories we’ve shared with our guests, staff, and community.”
“Your loyalty has meant more to us than words can express.”
The announcement has prompted an outpouring of messages from longtime customers sharing favorite memories and thanking the owners for their years of service.
Another Closure Along Downtown Hickory Street
The Chestnut Tree’s closing is the latest in a series of business departures that have reshaped parts of downtown Denton.
Earlier this year, Patchouli Joe’s Books & Indulgences also closed its doors after serving customers along Hickory Street.

Community Says Goodbye to a Local Favorite
For more than 30 years, the Chestnut Tree Teahouse & Bistro welcomed generations of customers looking for meals, celebrations, and memorable moments in the heart of Denton.
While the restaurant’s dining room will soon close for the final time, its owners say they are thankful for the relationships built over the years and look forward to continuing to serve the community through their catering business.
