New Hyde Park Man, 66, Killed After Being Struck by LIRR Train

A 66-year-old New Hyde Park man died Thursday afternoon after being struck by a Long Island Rail Road train near the New Hyde Park station, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department.

The man was identified as John Schoenberg.

What happened

MTA police said the incident occurred around 3:10 p.m. on Aug. 13, when LIRR train No. 1959 — traveling from Ronkonkoma to Penn Station — struck a person on the tracks west of the New Hyde Park station on the Ronkonkoma Branch.

Schoenberg, who police said was not authorized to be on the tracks, was pronounced dead at the scene by Nassau County EMS at 3:38 p.m.

No passengers or crew members aboard the train were injured.

Investigation ongoing

A preliminary investigation by MTA police, which included a review of surveillance video and witness statements, found no indication of criminal activity. The investigation remains ongoing, police said.

The Nassau County Police Department and Nassau County Fire Department assisted MTA police at the scene.

Service impact

LIRR service on the Port Jefferson Branch experienced delays while the investigation was underway. Those delays have since cleared.
