A quiet Gainesville apartment complex turned into a scene of terror when a man allegedly smashed through a closet wall to reach a 15-year-old girl who was home alone with her two younger siblings, authorities said.
Neighbors called 911 after hearing a girl screaming and witnessing a man dragging her by the hair while striking her repeatedly. Officers arrived within minutes and found the assault still underway, immediately stepping in to pull the attacker away from the teenager.
The suspect, 29-year-old Obed Reyes, lived in the same complex as the victim but reportedly had no prior connection to her or her family. Investigators say Reyes broke through a wall separating his closet from the neighboring unit, creating a hole large enough to force his way into the girl’s home.
At the time, the teen was watching her 5-year-old and 7-year-old siblings when Reyes allegedly grabbed her by the hair and began punching her. She managed to break free and ran to the breezeway outside, screaming for help while he continued the assault. During the attack, he allegedly threatened to rape her.
Reyes now faces a lengthy list of charges, including burglary, aggravated assault, attempted rape, kidnapping, and cruelty to children. He was booked into the Hall County Jail without incident.
A police spokesperson praised the neighbors who called for help, saying their quick action likely spared the teen from further harm. Officials emphasized that community awareness — people noticing something wrong and speaking up — played a direct role in stopping the attack before it escalated further.
The girl is now recovering from the physical and emotional trauma of the ordeal, with authorities noting that healing from an experience like this takes time. The investigation remains active as police continue to examine how the suspect gained access and whether any warning signs were missed beforehand.
