A routine patrol turned into a tense, multi-freeway pursuit through Los Angeles County after officers attempted to stop a driver suspected of reckless behavior on the road, according to authorities.
The pursuit reportedly began near East Los Angeles, when deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department attempted to pull over a vehicle whose driver was allegedly operating erratically. Instead of stopping, the driver sped off, setting off a chase that stretched across several parts of the county.
According to officials, the driver merged onto the CA-60 Freeway, weaving through traffic as the pursuit carried on through the San Gabriel Valley. Units continued to track the vehicle as it eventually made its way toward downtown Los Angeles, an area typically busy with both vehicle and foot traffic.
Rather than come to a stop, the suspect allegedly pushed further into the city, eventually entering the University Park neighborhood near the University of Southern California campus. It was there, authorities say, that the pursuit came to an unusual end — the driver reportedly abandoned the vehicle in the middle of the residential area and fled on foot, disappearing into the neighborhood before officers could make an arrest.
Investigators have not yet released the identity of the driver, and it remains unclear what prompted the initial attempt to flee from law enforcement. Authorities have also not confirmed whether the individual now facing potential charges will be located, or whether the case is being treated as a standalone incident or connected to other activity in the area.
Officials say the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and no further details have been made public at this time. Residents in the University Park area were reportedly asked to remain cautious as law enforcement combed the neighborhood following the abandoned vehicle discovery.
No injuries have been reported in connection with the chase.
