TRENTON, New Jersey — For the fourth time in five days, residents across parts of New Jersey are watching the sky again.
Strong thunderstorms with gusty winds developed Tuesday afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a severe thunderstorm warning at 4:48 p.m. for sections of Warren and Sussex counties. That warning remains in effect until 5:45 p.m.
What Forecasters Are Warning About
Today’s storms are not expected to be widespread, but that does not mean they are harmless.
Some of the developing storm cells could produce small hail, brief but intense bursts of heavy rain, and isolated wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph.
A 60 mph wind gust is strong enough to down tree branches, knock out power lines, and turn loose outdoor items into dangerous projectiles.
Who Is at Risk Right Now
The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of New Jersey under a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms today.
Marginal is the lowest of five risk categories — but it still means severe weather is possible, and residents in affected areas should not let that label create a false sense of security.
Warren and Sussex counties are currently under an active warning and should take shelter immediately if storms approach.
Stay Alert, Stay Safe
When a severe thunderstorm warning is issued for your area, move indoors right away.
Stay away from windows. Avoid using electronic devices plugged into wall outlets. Do not go outside until the warning has officially expired.
