HOUSTON, Texas — Tuesday brings a brief window of storm chances before the real story takes over — a building heat dome that will bake Southeast Texas through the weekend and beyond.
A few isolated showers and thunderstorms could pop up Tuesday afternoon, mainly along the sea breeze. But most neighborhoods will stay dry. Highs climb into the mid to upper 90s inland, with heat index values running between 102 and 108 degrees.
Rain Disappears, Heat Takes Over
By Wednesday, rain chances drop to near zero as high pressure locks in over the Gulf Coast.
That is not good news for anyone hoping for relief.
Temperatures push through the upper 90s later in the week, with a few spots possibly hitting 100 degrees this weekend and into early next week. Heat index values stay in the triple digits throughout.
How to Stay Safe in the Heat
This kind of heat is dangerous, especially for children, older adults, and anyone working or exercising outdoors.
- Drink water before you feel thirsty
- Step inside for air conditioning during the hottest hours, typically 1 to 5 p.m.
- Wear light-colored, lightweight clothing
- Never leave children or pets in a parked car
- Check on elderly neighbors and family members
Tropics Update
The Atlantic is getting more active. A system in the central tropical Atlantic now carries a 70% chance of development over the next seven days, with a tropical depression likely forming later this week.
At this time, there is no threat to Texas.
