A 31-year-old Phoenix man is facing murder charges after allegedly beating his 76-year-old roommate to death over a $50 electric bill dispute. Troy Yazzie was charged this week in Pima County with second-degree murder.
What Happened That Night
The incident took place on April 30 at the two men’s shared home in Phoenix. The elderly victim had given Yazzie $50 to pay their electric bill. When the bill went unpaid, he asked for the money back. Yazzie allegedly became angry, grabbed a white construction helmet, and struck the man repeatedly in the face.
Victim Spent Months in Hospital
The victim called 911 himself after the attack. He was rushed to the hospital with multiple facial fractures and brain bleeds. During the call, a male voice — believed to be Yazzie’s — was heard in the background asking, “Are you calling the cops?”
The victim remained hospitalized for over two months before passing away earlier this month from complications related to his injuries.
Suspect Made No Self-Defense Claim
According to the arrest affidavit, Yazzie did not claim self-defense. He reportedly told investigators he knew the victim was elderly and understood that hitting an older person could cause serious injury or death.
Where the Case Stands
Yazzie is currently held on a $1 million bond. He faces a charge of second-degree murder as the case continues.
