4-Year-Old Girl Never Woke Up After Dental Procedure, Texas Doctor Now Faces Criminal Charge

Fort Worth, Texas — A North Texas doctor has been arrested months after a 4-year-old girl died following what was expected to be a routine dental procedure, with investigators alleging the child received a toxic amount of medication before she became unresponsive.

According to the Fort Worth Police Department, the incident occurred on April 1 at Cuddle Kids Dental Care on Sycamore School Road, where the child had been taken by her mother for a frenotomy tongue-tie procedure performed by Dr. Chrishelle Hemphill.

What began as a routine appointment quickly turned into a medical emergency that ultimately led to the child’s death.

Child Reportedly Never Woke Up After Procedure

According to an arrest affidavit, staff members told investigators that after the procedure had been completed, the child did not respond and would not wake up.

The girl’s mother reportedly witnessed efforts to revive her daughter before emergency crews arrived.

According to court documents, she told investigators she saw Dr. Hemphill place a popsicle against the child’s lips in an apparent attempt to wake her, but the child remained unresponsive.

First responders transported the 4-year-old to a Fort Worth hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Medical Examiner Found Lethal Drug Level

An autopsy later determined that the child’s death was accidental and caused by meperidine toxicity, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner.

Court records state that investigators found 793 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) of meperidine in the child’s system.

According to the affidavit, the medical examiner noted that therapeutic levels for an adult typically range from about 200 to 500 ng/mL, making the amount detected in the child significantly higher.

Investigators further allege that the dose administered was approximately twice the appropriate amount and would have been considered toxic even for an adult.

Police Investigation Led to Doctor’s Arrest

Following the child’s death, the Fort Worth Police Department’s Crimes Against Children Unit launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the procedure.

According to police, investigators determined that a criminal offense had occurred and identified Dr. Chrishelle Hemphill, 48, as the person responsible for performing the procedure.

On July 15, authorities obtained an arrest warrant, and Dr. Hemphill was taken into custody.

She has been charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.

The charge reflects the allegations made by investigators. As with all criminal defendants, Dr. Hemphill is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Family Continues to Grieve Loss

Following the tragedy, supporters created a GoFundMe campaign to assist the young girl’s family with funeral expenses and help return her body to Mexico for burial.

The heartbreaking case has drawn widespread attention as investigators continue moving the criminal proceedings forward.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding future court dates or whether any further charges could be considered as the case progresses.
