Anaheim Hills, California — Trader Joe’s is continuing its nationwide expansion with another Southern California location, giving residents of Anaheim Hills something to look forward to as the popular grocery chain prepares to move into a former Big Lots store.
The company has confirmed that the new location will open at 6336 E. Santa Ana Canyon Road inside Anaheim Hills Village, ending months of speculation about the future of the vacant retail space.
Although shoppers will have to wait a little longer before filling their carts, Trader Joe’s says work is already underway to prepare the new store.
Former Big Lots Space Getting New Life
The Anaheim Hills location will occupy a building previously operated by Big Lots, transforming the vacant storefront into one of Trader Joe’s newest California locations.
The site is now officially listed as “Coming Soon” on Trader Joe’s website, confirming reports that had circulated among local residents over the past year.
Community members have closely followed the project since information surfaced indicating the grocery chain had secured permits for the property.
While construction continues, Trader Joe’s has not announced a specific grand opening date. However, the company recently updated its website with a message to customers saying:
“Our crew is working hard so we can open our doors.”
Expansion Continues Across the Country
The Anaheim Hills store is part of Trader Joe’s ongoing national growth strategy.
The company plans to open approximately 20 new stores during 2026, continuing a period of rapid expansion that accelerated over the past two years.
That follows a busy 2025, during which Trader Joe’s added 43 new stores across the United States.
The continued investment comes as several other grocery retailers have slowed expansion efforts or announced cost-cutting measures.
Instead, Trader Joe’s continues focusing on opening stores in growing communities where customer demand remains strong.
Popular Grocery Chain Maintains Loyal Following
Trader Joe’s has built a devoted customer base through its combination of private-label products, affordable pricing, and distinctive shopping experience.
Many shoppers visit specifically for exclusive products such as the chain’s Everything but the Bagel Seasoning, Mandarin Orange Chicken, frozen meals, snacks, and seasonal specialty items.
The retailer’s smaller-format stores and constantly changing product selection have helped it stand out in an increasingly competitive grocery market.
Its expansion into Anaheim Hills is expected to give nearby residents another convenient shopping option while bringing one of the nation’s most recognizable grocery brands into the community.

New Store Could Benefit Local Area
Beyond providing another grocery destination, new Trader Joe’s locations have often been associated with increased commercial activity in surrounding neighborhoods.
Real estate experts have frequently referred to what’s known as the “Trader Joe’s Effect,” a term describing the tendency for nearby residential property values and retail activity to receive a boost after a store opens.
Although every community is different, many local residents hope the new grocery store will help attract additional shoppers and businesses to Anaheim Hills Village.
As work continues inside the former Big Lots building, customers are eagerly awaiting the announcement of an official opening date.
Until then, Trader Joe’s says its team remains focused on preparing the location to welcome shoppers in the near future.
