Trader Joe’s Continues Rapid Growth

The retailer has maintained an aggressive expansion pace in recent years.

According to the company, 34 new stores opened in 2024, followed by 43 additional locations in 2025, bringing Trader Joe’s footprint to more than 600 stores nationwide.

Today, the grocery chain operates in 42 states and the District of Columbia, making it one of the country’s fastest-growing specialty grocery retailers.

Its business model centers on private-label products, rotating seasonal inventory, and competitive pricing, helping the brand attract shoppers looking for affordable, high-quality groceries.

Why Some States Still Don’t Have Trader Joe’s

Despite its continued expansion, eight states remain without a Trader Joe’s location:

  • South Dakota
  • West Virginia
  • Wyoming

Company officials have previously explained that population density, customer demand, traffic patterns, and supply chain logistics all play major roles when selecting future store locations.

On the Inside Trader Joe’s podcast, company representatives said these factors help determine where new stores can operate successfully.

The company has also noted that opening stores in Alaska and Hawaii presents additional logistical challenges because of their distance from the retailer’s primary distribution network.

As Trader Joe’s continues expanding across the country, shoppers in dozens of communities can expect even greater access to the retailer’s popular products in the months ahead.
