Polk County, Iowa- A Bondurant, Iowa mother may avoid further prison time after pleading guilty in the death of her 3-year-old son, who was found dying inside a scorching hot garage while she was asleep inside the house.
Tiffani Huff Holmes, 41, originally faced a felony charge of child endangerment resulting in death. She pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, an aggravated misdemeanor, and now faces a maximum of just two years behind bars. She is scheduled to be sentenced on August 28.
The incident took place on June 28, 2025, at a home on the 24000 block of Hawthorn Drive in Bondurant, near Des Moines. According to investigators, Holmes “knowingly” left her toddler son unsupervised for a period of time, during which he became trapped in the garage on a day when outdoor temperatures climbed to 91 degrees.
Holmes told investigators she had taken a nap but could not recall how long she had been asleep. When she woke up, she went to the garage and found the boy sitting in a lawn chair. His lips were blue, his skin was burning hot, and he was drenched in sweat. Instead of immediately calling for help, Holmes waited five to ten minutes before dialing 911.
Dispatchers instructed her to bring the boy inside and begin CPR. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but lifesaving efforts failed. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators noted a near-empty bottle of vodka at the home. Holmes claimed she had consumed the alcohol only after discovering her son. The boy’s father, however, told authorities that Holmes had struggled with alcohol abuse for approximately five years and was not supposed to be drinking.
The father also confirmed that the boy could not open doors on his own — including the garage door, which was broken and required lifting to open — raising serious questions about how the child ended up there alone.
