MILLINGTON, Tennessee — A 15-year-old boy found himself stranded alone on the side of a busy highway after dark — not because of an accident, not because of a stranger, but because of his own mother.
It was around 7:45 p.m. on a Sunday when Angel Harris, 31, was driving south on Highway 51 with her teenage son. The two began arguing about the people her son had been spending time with.
Then she pulled over.
The boy stepped out of the car. Harris drove away — and before she left, she took his phone from him as he tried to reach 911.
He was alone, in the dark, on a major highway, with no way to call for help.
A Stranger Saved Him That Night
The teenager had no family or friends nearby he could turn to. With no phone and no crosswalk in sight, he crossed the highway through medium traffic under nighttime conditions and walked into a nearby sports grill.
He asked a stranger inside if he could use her phone.
That call reached the Millington Police Department. Officers arrived to find a boy who said he was not physically hurt — but was deeply shaken.
When police contacted Harris, she told them she did not think law enforcement would do anything anyway. She admitted to leaving her son and said she never went back or called anyone to check on him.
No missing-person report had been filed.
The boy’s grandmother was contacted and came to bring him home.
Mother Now Faces Criminal Charges
Harris was arrested and charged with child neglect or endangerment and interference with emergency calls. She was released and is due in court on September 17.
A child reached out for help the only way he could — and his own mother took that away from him too.
