HUGO, Minnesota — Charlene Wunderlich had been afraid of her own son for years. She had filed for a protection order. She had watched the situation escalate. At one point, she reportedly told people she did not care if she lived or died anymore.
On the evening of September 16, 2024, her worst fears came true.
Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office were called to a home on Ingersoll Avenue after a 911 call came in — and stayed open. Dispatchers could hear sounds consistent with an assault happening in real time.
When officers arrived, they found Charlene on the floor in obvious distress. Her son, Trevor Wunderlich, was seated in a chair right next to her.
He ran.
She Named Him Before She Lost Consciousness
Officers immediately turned their attention to Charlene. She had severe injuries across her face, head, arms, legs, and torso. For a brief moment, she was conscious — and she used that moment to tell officers it was her son who had attacked her.
Then she lost consciousness and never recovered.
The medical examiner determined she died from multiple blunt force injuries, including multiple rib fractures, a fractured sternum, and pulmonary damage. The prosecutor later told the court her back had been beaten so badly her ribcage could no longer expand — she essentially suffocated on her own kitchen floor.
A History of Violence — And a $1 Million Motive
Trevor Wunderlich had a long history with law enforcement. Years before the killing, Charlene had written in a protection order application that her son “wishes I would die” — and that it had been escalating for three years.
Prosecutors say there was also a financial motive. Charlene had life insurance policies, and Trevor was listed as a beneficiary. Investigators believe he stood to gain over $1 million from her death.
Trevor Wunderlich has maintained his innocence. He faces life in prison if convicted.
