Sanitation Worker Dies After Falling From Garbage Truck on First Day at New Job

CHEROKEE COUNTY, S.C. — A 32-year-old sanitation worker died Monday after falling from a garbage truck on his very first day of work, according to the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office.

The victim has been identified as John Derrick Dover, 32.

What Happened

Officials say Dover was riding on the rear platform of the garbage truck around 1:50 p.m. when the vehicle made a turn. Dover fell off and struck the pavement.

He was rushed to Spartanburg Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries, the coroner’s office confirmed.

A Family Connection

According to the coroner’s office, the garbage truck was being driven by Dover’s father at the time of the accident. It was reportedly Dover’s first day on the job.
