NEW YORK CITY, New York — New York City is not taking any chances this week.
City officials have activated emergency plans for both extreme heat and flash flooding ahead of what forecasters are calling two of the most dangerous weather days of the summer.
Thursday and Friday have both been declared First Alert Weather Days.
A Heat Advisory is in effect for most of the Tri-State Area from 11 a.m. Thursday through 8 p.m. Friday. With oppressive humidity factored in, it will feel like 95 to 100 degrees at peak hours.
That kind of heat does not just feel uncomfortable — it can turn deadly, fast.
Storms Are Coming Too, and Friday Looks Worse
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to move in late Thursday afternoon and evening, mostly north and west of the city.
Friday brings a bigger threat. Storms are expected to be more widespread, raising the risk of flash flooding across the city.
Residents are urged to avoid low-lying areas and underpasses during heavy rain.
Cooling Centers and Street Outreach Are Already Being Deployed
Hundreds of cooling centers will be open across all five boroughs Thursday and Friday, giving New Yorkers a safe place to escape the heat.
City officials have also expanded street outreach both days to help people experiencing homelessness reach shelter, cooling centers, and other services.
Nearly two dozen COOL vans — Cooling Outreach On-Location — will be on the streets providing medical help, meals, and direct assistance to those most at risk.
What You Need to Do Right Now
If you see downed trees or blocked catch basins during a storm, call 311.
If you or someone near you is trapped by rising floodwater or in immediate danger, call 911 immediately.
Check on elderly neighbors, young children, and anyone without air conditioning — the next 48 hours will test this city, and looking out for each other is what gets everyone through it.
