North Central West Virginia is heading into one of its more persistently wet stretches of the summer. Starting Thursday and running all the way into early next week, residents can expect daily rounds of showers and thunderstorms fueled by an unusually high amount of atmospheric moisture in the region.
Flash Flooding Is the Real Threat to Watch
The biggest concern this week is not just the rain — it is how fast it can pile up.
Slow-moving storms that linger over the same areas, known as training thunderstorms, can drop significant rainfall in a short window. That raises the risk of localized flash flooding, particularly in low-lying neighborhoods and areas near streams and creeks.
Residents should avoid driving through flooded roads and stay aware of any local alerts.
Friday and Saturday Will Be the Worst Days
Thursday will see mostly isolated showers with some partial sunshine, but conditions deteriorate heading into the weekend.
Friday and Saturday are expected to carry the heaviest concentration of afternoon and evening storms. Temperatures will stay in the 80s at lower elevations and the mid to upper 70s at higher elevations throughout this stretch.
A Brief Break Sunday Before It Returns
A weak cold front moving through Sunday will bring slightly drier air and lower storm chances — but do not put the umbrella away just yet.
By Monday and Tuesday, high moisture levels return, and multiple rounds of rain and storms are expected to kick off the new week.
