Tanner, Alabama — What was supposed to be a first meeting arranged through a dating app quickly turned into a frightening ordeal after an Alabama man was allegedly robbed at gunpoint by two people authorities say lured him to a meeting location.
According to the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of an armed robbery on Stewart Road in Tanner, a community located about 24 miles west of Huntsville.
Investigators say the victim had connected with a woman through the Tinder dating app and agreed to meet her in person. However, when he arrived at the designated location, police say the encounter took an unexpected and violent turn.
Police Say Victim Was Ambushed Upon Arrival
According to investigators, the man told deputies that instead of meeting the woman he had been communicating with, he was confronted by both a man and a woman, who allegedly robbed him at gunpoint.
Authorities have not disclosed exactly what property was taken from the victim, but investigators immediately began interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence from the scene.
The information gathered during the investigation helped deputies quickly identify potential suspects.
Suspects Arrested a Short Distance Away
Police said deputies located the two suspects a short distance from the robbery scene shortly after the incident.
Authorities arrested James Christopher Toney, 23, of Athens, and Erika Rose Parr, 19, of Tanner.
Both suspects were charged with first-degree robbery and possession of marijuana before being booked into the Limestone County Jail.
According to jail records, Toney was being held on a $5,000 bond for the marijuana charge, while Parr was being held on a $1,000 bond for the same offense. Neither suspect had bond set on the robbery charge.
Search Warrant Leads to Additional Evidence
As part of the investigation, deputies executed a search warrant at a nearby residence connected to the suspects.
During the search, investigators recovered property believed to have been stolen from the victim, along with a firearm that authorities believe was used during the alleged robbery.
Officials have not said whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
Sheriff Commends Investigators’ Quick Response
Limestone County Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin praised the deputies and investigators involved in the case for acting swiftly after receiving the robbery report.
“Quick response, attention to detail, and coordinated efforts” led to the suspects’ arrests “in a very short period of time.”
Authorities have not released additional details about how long the victim had been communicating with the woman before the meeting or whether investigators believe similar incidents may have occurred.
The case serves as a reminder for people using online dating platforms to take precautions when meeting someone for the first time, including choosing public locations and informing family or friends of their plans.
