Covington, Louisiana — A Louisiana community is mourning the loss of a beloved city employee who died while trying to save his granddaughter after she fell into a lake, leaving family members, coworkers and local officials remembering him as a selfless hero.
Chris Rushing, who worked for the City of Covington’s Department of Cultural Arts & Events, entered the waters of Bayou Lacombe on July 1 after his granddaughter fell into the water, according to authorities and family members.
The heartbreaking incident occurred just days before the city’s Fourth of July celebrations, an event Rushing had helped organize as part of his work with the city.
Grandfather Jumped Into Water to Save His Granddaughter
Witnesses told local media that Rushing immediately entered the water after seeing his granddaughter in danger.
During the rescue attempt, he reportedly experienced difficulties and disappeared beneath the surface.
According to reports, another woman who was nearby also jumped into the water and successfully brought the child to safety before emergency crews arrived.
Firefighters later recovered Rushing from the water and transported him to a nearby hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, he died a short time later.
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said the death is believed to be an accidental drowning, pending the results of an autopsy.
Family Says He Would Have Made the Same Choice Again
Loved ones say Rushing’s actions reflected the kind of person he was.
A GoFundMe campaign created to help with funeral expenses describes him as a devoted grandfather who deeply loved his family.
“Christopher adored his grandbabies, and his love for them was endless.”
The family also shared that his final act was one of courage and sacrifice.
“His legacy as a hero will live on, as he passed away saving his grandbaby. I know if he were here today, he would not think twice about the decision he made.”
Relatives described Rushing as someone who was always smiling and willing to help others whenever they needed him.
“He was loved by everyone who met him.”
“He was nothing short of a good man, and his kindness touched so many lives.”
The family added that any funds remaining after funeral expenses will be used to establish a nonprofit organization in Rushing’s memory, continuing the spirit of service that defined his life.
Community Leaders Remember a Selfless Public Servant
Rushing’s passing has deeply affected the Covington community, where he was well known through his work organizing local events and bringing people together.

“My heart truly hurts. Chris focused on making our world a better place. He worked every day to do so. Some people are called heroes, but he truly was one, giving his own life attempting to help someone else in dire need.”
Covington Mayor Mark Johnson also reflected on the devastating loss, saying the news has been difficult for the city to process.
“Chris will be remembered for his ever-present smile, the joy that emanated from him and for his innate desire to help others.”
