Kentucky Woman Arrested After Chasing 8-Year-Old Girl and Attempting to Kidnap Her

A 42-year-old Kentucky woman is behind bars after allegedly attempting to kidnap an 8-year-old girl in a Portland, Kentucky neighborhood. Charra Lewis was charged Saturday with kidnapping a minor and burglary and booked into the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.

How It Unfolded

According to court documents, Lewis approached the young girl and asked if she needed help finding her mother. She also allegedly offered the girl an unspecified item.

When the girl tried to run back to her house, Lewis chased her and attempted to restrain her. The girl managed to reach her home and lock the door behind her.

Lewis then allegedly used a metal garden pole to try to break the door down, damaging a window screen in the process. A nearby family flagged down Louisville Metro Police officers, who arrived and took Lewis into custody.

Her Explanation

When questioned by police, Lewis claimed she was trying to “save” the girl. She told officers she did not believe the girl’s mother was actually her mother.

In Custody, Court Date Pending

Lewis was scheduled for arraignment Monday, but the hearing was canceled after reports that she was not cooperating with staff at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections. A new court date has not been set. Her bond information has not been made available, and she remains in custody.
